Texas Prefreshman Engineering Program

The Prefreshman Engineering Program (PREP provides a challenging academic program designed to motivate and prepare middle and high school students for success in advanced studies leading to careers in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). Founded in 1979 by UTSA mathematics professor, Dr. Manuel Berriozabal, PREP is an intense, mathematics-based summer program which stresses the development of abstract reasoning and problem solving skills. The program, approximately seven weeks in length, is presented over the course of four summers to students entering grades seven to eleven. PREP particularly encourages the participation of members of minority groups and female students who traditionally have been underrepresented in STEM fields. The Texas Education Agency has authorized participating school districts in the state of Texas to award one elective credit toward high school graduation for each successfully completed summer of PREP. Most schools provide funding for their students to participate. If a school does not provide funding, the cost is $300 per student.
